FM.24.08: 4th Annual Urban Bike Relay

Once again, another year, another amazing event. 192 riders on 58 teams completed 1152 laps, which is about 13,800 miles. Thats a lot of miles! These solo riders, teams of 2, and teams of up to 6 met up at Johnny's Pizza on North Highland at 11am on Saturday, September 6th and someone from each team was riding from noon on Saturday until noon on Sunday. We weren't aware of any hospital trips or police interactions this year, and the upgrades to the RFID based race tracker from last year made the lap tracking process even easier for riders.

Mentions on the Internet

  • "... That was the most fun 24 hour race I have ever done....and there has been many. I thought I'd get bored being on the road for so long, but oh au contraire it was a blast." and "Awesome job to all the organizers, participants and spectators. All of the positive energy at Johnny's and the checkpoints was so motivational. The ass slapping at Elliot St, the "what's your favorite country" assault at No Brakes, the odd looks from the patrons of Flat Iron, and of course the melee of the race HQ ....all of it and plus just being in the city all day & night to witness the transformation was really cool. Thanks." - Eddie 0, first place solo rider
  • "I haven't left yet, but I can already say that FM 24 proved once more that it is well worth the transatlantic trip. I met cool new people, had some quality time on the route with others I already knew and am still high on the fun goodness. Thanks y'all!" - Alex
  • "wow, guys. great race yet again!!! i had a crazy fun time." - Connie
  • "It was awesome. I can't wait for next year. Ill definately be able to backup my smack talk next time around." - Pat
  • "My team and all the teams around me had a great time. We acquired several spectators who just slept/drank/cheered at our camp throughout the night and morning as well. As a team, we weren't that competitive with the other teams, but we all worked to improve our individual lap times with great success. It was an eye-opening experience for some of our least experienced riders and an encouraging/challenging romp for the rest of us." - Pamela
  • "Thanks for putting on a great race! The course was fantastic and stayed fun and interesting to ride the entire 24 h. That fucking rocked." - Emily
  • "i slammed into a pot-hole on oakdale during the dark hours of the night. my wheel is well beyond the truing stand. Two broken spokes!! (I'm still amazed that I didn't get a flat) Just unhooked the rear brake and kept going. The last three laps were quite wobbily...." - Phil

Things to maybe Improve Next Year(?)

  • tracking system complexity at tracking table (ckdake wants to sleep and drink more, and work less)
  • better feedback of tracking system swipes at checkpoints for riders
  • more information on website of tracking system (more # of placings, separation of team types)
  • on-site tracking computer for people to use
  • volunteer coordination for parking, table, etc
  • more free beer on Sunday
  • portapoties - they smell bad but we need (more of) them. what to do with them?
  • lip entrance to johnnys eats wheels
  • different date? "labor day ruins training" and weather.
